Effect on WDM due to Cross Phase Modulation

چکیده
Cross phase modulation (XPM) is known as the phenomenon that the variations of intensity of one optical signal can change the refractive index of the fiber (Kerr effects), and modulate the phase of other optical signals co-propagating in the same fiber .We compare the impact of Q-factor, BER and timing jitter due to cross-phase modulation (XPM) in a wavelength-divisionmultiplexed system for different length of fiber. We then examine the commonly used method of estimating XPM system penalties from the amplitude of XPM-induced intensity modulation of a continuous-wave (CW) probe. Our study indicates that this approach does indeed provide a good estimate of XPM system penalty by comparing simulations.

Analytical Assessment of the Q-factor due to Cross-Phase Modulation (XPM) in Multispan WDM Transmission Systems
In this paper cross-phase modulation (XPM) and its impact on multispan NRZ-modulated wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems is examined. An analytical model is presented to assess the signal degradation. The impairments due to XPM are related to a Q-factor. The presented formulas are examined for different dispersion compensation schemes and also mixed-fiber systems. The analytical mode...
متن کاملMethod of compensating cross phase modulation in 10Gbit/s WDM systems over nonzero dispersion shifted fibre
Introduction: The use of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and optical amplification as a method of increasing the information capacity and/or reach in optical fibre systems has led to significant propagation impairments owing to fibre nonlinearity [1]. Important nonlinear effects causing inter-channel crosstalk in WDM systems are four wave mixing (FWM) and cross phase modulation (XPM). FW...

AbstractWith the advent of technology Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) is always an area of interest in the field of optical communication. When combined with Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA), it provides high data transmission rate and low attenuation. But due to fiber non-linearity such as Self Phase Modulation (SPM) and Cross Phase Modulation (XPM) the system performance has degrade...
